Side effects, contraindications and regulatory status

Reported side effects

  • Identity: epitalon is the synthetic tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly; epithalamin is a pineal-derived polypeptide extract. A 2026 narrative review says the two "should not be considered interchangeable" (Int J Mol Sci 2026).[2] Observational
  • The same review states human safety data on epitalon are minimal and that none of the human studies were dedicated prospective safety studies (Int J Mol Sci 2026).[2] Observational
  • Same review: in the intramuscular epitalon study (epitalon n=15) no apparent adverse effects were reported but adverse-event methods were limited; in the sublingual AEDG study adverse-event data were not systematically reported.[2] Observational
  • FDA evaluation of epitalon (free base and acetate), briefing document dated 2026-05-12: FDA concludes there are no clinical data to support safety in humans, and notes a particular immunogenicity risk for subcutaneous injection.[4] Regulator or expert-panel statement
  • Same FDA document: nonclinical studies were too limited in scope and duration to inform safety; FDA notes epitalon has been shown to activate telomerase and that longer telomeres are generally associated with increased cancer risk.[4] Regulator or expert-panel statement
  • In one-year-old female C3H/He mice injected with epitalon 0.1 mcg 5 times a week for 6.5 months, the authors report no toxic effect (In Vivo 2006). Animal study, not human data.[3] Animal study
